Dioxins
Dioxins are something that are unintentionally produced at the time of burning chemical substances and bleaching in the papermaking process. Dioxins are a general name for PCCDs: Polychlorinated Dibenzo-para-Dioxins), PCDFs: Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans, Co-PCBs: Coplanar-Polychlorinated Biphenyls. These substances are regarded as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the research by WHO shows their health risks (Carcinogenicity and Immunotoxicity) when existing in the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to check if dioxins are contained in soil or dust, and feed and analysis of them are carried out worldwide.
Structure and toxicity of dioxins
The structure of dioxin has two benzene rings. There are many isomers in existence, according to the number and position of chlorine substitution. Toxicity is expressed by WHO as a coefficient (Toxic Equivalency Factor: TEF) where the most toxic 2,3,7,8-TetraCCD is 1. 7 types of PCDDs, 10 types of PCDDs, and 12 types of Co-PCBs are considered toxic.
Analytical Method of Dioxins
As a general analysis method, measurement is performed by GC-HRMS such as
JMS-800D (JIS K0311, JIS K0312). Also, because there are many homologues and their isomers by a number
of chlorine substitutions, the isotope dilution method is used for qualitative analysis of dioxins,
unlike general qualitative analysis. For chlorinated dioxins of weak toxicity, it is necessary to use a
group calibration curve. Therefore, we have offered the analysis software "Diok" dedicated for dioxins.
On the other hand, measurement using GC-MS/MS such as the JMS-TQ4000GC has been recently certified in
countries in Europe(EU589/2014). So, we newly developed analysis software "TQ-Diok", dedicated for
dioxins which is capable of analysis of MS/MS data. Thus, the data measured by JMS-800D can be analyzed
by using Diok, and the data measured by JMS-TQ4000GC can be analyzed by using TQ-Diok.
