case 01
Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, JAMSTECKochi Institute for Core Sample Research, KOCHI
The KOCHI was established in October 2005 as the fifth domestic hub of the JAMSTEC. Since then, it has been highly valued worldwide as a unique research facility which consistently carries out drilled core processing, storage and advanced researches, leading the technology development on geological, biological and scientific drilling field.

Details of environmental countermeasure

Building・laboratory
- Air-conditioner
- Elevator
- Indoor power facilities
-
ImpactVibration, noise, temperature fluctuation, air flow
General air conditioners work by blowing out temperature-controlled wind.
Noises and vibrations from the blowing fan and airflow from the vent can be source of environmental disturbance.
In addition, temperature fluctuation in the installation room may affect the instrument. -
-
ImpactFluctuating magnetic field (DC)
For an elevator to work, a steel carrier and balance weight moves up and down respectively. As the elevator (made of steel, a magnetic material) moves in a uniform geomagnetic field, a DC fluctuating magnetic field will be generated, affecting the instrument.
-
-
ImpactFluctuating magnetic field (AC)
The electricity drawn into the building from the power lines is reduced to the required voltage at the indoor substation and distributed to the required locations. The AC fluctuating magnetic field is generated in the indoor power line route and around the electrical facilities, which can affect the instrument.
-

Electric power line

ImpactFluctuating magnetic field (AC)
The electricity that we use in our daily lives is generated at a power station, and transmitted by special high-voltage power lines to the consuming area. As the extremely high current flows in the power line, the AC fluctuating magnetic field near the power line can affect the instruments.

Underground trains

ImpactFluctuating magnetic field (AC)
There is a network of underground lines underneath major cities. Most of them are electrified by DC, and the running current of the trains causes a DC fluctuating magnetic field that can affect the instrument.

Road traffic

ImpactFluctuating magnetic field (DC), vibration, noise
If there is a road nearby where large vehicles travel, the vibration caused by the vehicles travelling may be transmitted to the floor of the building, depending on the nature of the ground. Also, the movement of a vehicle made of steel (magnetic material) in a uniform geomagnetic field generates a DC fluctuating magnetic field that can affect the instrument.

Construction works

ImpactVibration, noise, fluctuating magnetic field (DC)
If there is a large-scale construction near the installation site, operation of heavy equipment and cranes may shake the ground, and cause vibrations on the floor of the site. Moreover, the DC fluctuating magnetic field may be generated as crane's boom works.

Electric trains

ImpactFluctuating magnetic field (DC・AC), Vibration
Electrified railway tracks often become the source of magnetic field fluctuation due to electric current supplied from overhead lines or third rail to the railroad vehicles.
In addition, heavy vehicles running on the tracks may shake the surrounding ground and become a source of vibrations.
