Current state-of-the-art solid state NMR probes spin samples extremely quickly, thus the balance of the sample in the rotor is very important. There is a risk of damaging the probe if an unbalanced sample is spun. A bench top spinner is used to test the spinning in advance thus avoiding t the risk. It is also recommended for samples which are difficult to balance such as films, pellets, etc.
