brightness
brightness
The brightness represents the performance of an electron gun. The unit of the brightness is expressed by "A/cm2sr", indicating the current density per the unit solid angle. As the electron-probe diameter is small, the current density becomes high, and the brightness is increased. The high-brightness electron gun is suitable for acquiring a high-resolution SEM image.
The brightness of the thermionic-emission gun which uses a tungsten (W) filament is about 105 A/cm2sr. Those of the field-emission electron gun and the Schottky electron gun are about 108 A/cm2sr, three orders of magnitudes higher than that of the thermionic-emission gun.
