De novo structure determination of nano-crystalline powders

Despite advances in powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), solving the structures of nanocrystalline powders remains challenging due to the inherent ambiguities of diffraction methods, such as locating hydrogen atoms and distinguishing heteroatoms (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen / phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine). Here, we introduce a novel approach for determining crystalline structures without any prior information by integrating X-ray fluorescence (XRF), SynergyED, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), and solid-state NMR.
