Message From CEO

JEOL was founded in May 1949, soon after the end of World War II, by Kenji Kazato, the founder of JEOL, as a developing company of electron microscopes in the hope of restoring the country through science and technology. Thanks to your support, we have celebrated our 75th anniversary. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for your warm support and guidance over the years.

Since our foundation, we have devoted ourselves into developing cutting-edge scientific and metrology instruments, industrial equipment, and medical equipment with the strong belief to "support science and technology in the world". More and more countries aim to become science and technology powerhouses as in a competition among nations, and investment in cutting-edge technology is accelerating worldwide. Our niche technologies that we have challenged and developed with the top scientists, are the source of our future further growth. As one of the few companies in the world who operate such a business, we believe that the meaning of our existence and social responsibility are significant.

These days are said to be an era of rapid and unpredictable change, with intensifying international conflicts and related economic friction, the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain problems, and new AI and IT technologies that continue to emerge. That is why I believe that it is important to demonstrate what we want to be, what we should be as a company both internally and externally. When we announced our current mid-term management plan, "Evolving Growth Plan," we clearly defined our future direction as "becoming a top niche company supporting science and technology around the world".

Based on our unique and niche technologies and human network that have been established with our science and metrology instrument business, by utilizing our key word of "YOKOGUSHI" which is to promote innovation by co-creation, we are committed to improve our corporate value by offering higher added value products and solutions to new areas.

It is not possible for our company alone to realize our management philosophy to "contribute to scientific progress and societal development". It can only be realized when our customers, business partners, shareholders, partners in industry, government, and academia, local communities, and JEOL Group employees are connected and cooperate with each other under the concept of "YOKOGUSHI". In particular, our company is one of the few niche global companies that possess the electron beam technology that we have cultivated since our founding, along with a lineup of high-end scientific and metrology instruments. I think that this characteristic is the source of our activities to create versatile "YOKOGUSHI". I sincerely hope that we can continue to further deepen our exchange through "YOKOGUSHI" with you.

Fiscal year 2024, the 75th year since our founding, will be the final year of our mid-term management plan "Evolving Growth Plan". We will continue to take on new challenges together with JEOL Group employees around the world to achieve our mid-term management plan and become a "niche top company supporting science and technology worldwide".

We look forward to your continued support and cooperation.

Interview 75 years history of JEOL inheriting genes of science

Interview01

The path followed by the DA-1, the origin of developing the electron microscope by JEOL Ltd.

DA-1 is an electron microscope that was successfully developed for the first time and commercialized by the founding members of JEOL Ltd in 1947. In the R&D Bldg. at the head office, the valuable DA-1 instrument is sitting. The DA-1 in the R&D Bldg. was transferred from Ibaraki University in November 1975. What history has it followed thus far? We interviewed some of the people involved. A part of the history of this instrument coming to JEOL has been known.

Interview02

The reason why the TEM in the 75th year looks like a smart home appliance

In May 2024, its 75th anniversary year, JEOL released a new transmission electron microscope (TEM) "JEM-120i".
An electron microscope is an instrument in which a column containing an electron gun is visible. But the appearance of "JEM-120i" is a cuboid in an off-white color. One can hardly guess what the instrument is by the appearance. From the front, it looks like a smart home appliance. It feels like a product that sets itself apart from conventional TEMs.
The concepts of "JEM-120i" are 1. Compact, 2. Easy To Use, 3. Expandable. How did these concepts come together to form this product? We interviewed the development team.
