JEOL Ltd. (JEOL; Yoshiyasu Harada, President) and Advanced Capacitor Technologies Inc. (ACT; Toru Usami, President) have developed a new model of high energy double layer supercapacitor, Premlis®, featuring an enhanced energy density of 30 Wh/kg, and a new battery, “Capacitor Battery™,” with an enhanced compatibility with lead batteries. Both products will be exhibited at the CAETEC Japan 2007 (Cutting-Edge IT & Electronics Comprehensive Exhibition) on October 2 at Makuhari Messe.

1. 1. Premlis® with an enhanced energy density of 30 Wh/kg

Clean energies such as solar energy are expected to be utilized more extensively as part of anti global warming solutions. Solar energy panels, having a life of 20 years or longer, are combined with batteries to form a self sufficient power supply system, which is in increasing demand in areas where power is difficult to obtain.

JEOL’s supercapacitor, Premlis®, has been tested as a battery for solar energy panels at a number of sites where samples of the supercapacitor were provided. Many applications are being tested including night illumination systems and various indicators which combine the supercapacitor with an energy saving, long lasting LED.

ACT developed a new model of supercapacitor, Premlis®, designed as a solar energy battery. Featuring an enhanced energy density of 30 Wh/kg, the supercapacitor is compact and light, yet superior to conventional capacitors in performance, open to a wide range of applications. Its safety has also been proven. ACT plans to supply samples starting in April 2008.

2. New Capacitor Battery™

Capacitor Battery™, developed to meet a market demand of lead free batteries, is a battery device with an expected life of 10 years or longer.

Capacitor Battery™ incorporates 12 cells of the Premlis® 20 Wh/kg announced in April 2007 and a constant voltage circuit, featuring a higher compatibility with lead batteries. ACT is planning on sales of samples within 2007 (price yet determined).
